The Ronald laboratory studies the role that genes play in a plant's response to its environment. Our main research model is rice, the staple food for more than 3 billion people. Projects include studies of the XA21-mediate innate immune response, characterization of pathogen produced signal molecules that trigger host resistance, elucidation of the mechanisms of tolerance to environmental stresses such as flooding, and identification of genes controlling cell wall formation.
